Changeobots! Part 2

"Both parts of this series were great!"

date: November 1, 2009

This review is for all of your cartoons currently on NG, btw.

=====

Well yeah, great animation, looks very professional! (Well you ARE a veteran animator from Nickelodeon.) The character designs also made good satire, even if a little over-the-top. However, the animation in the Changeobot series doesn't seem to be as good as the one in your Prop 8 cartoon.

The voice acting was excellent; the first cartoon had a very good impersonation of Obama's voice and accent, and Palin's voice in this cartoon was just wonderful. However, McCain-bot guy doesn't sound like McCain at all.

I also watched the previous part of this cartoon, and in context, this series is not biased against or towards any particular party, as most people seemed to have perceived. The first cartoon was a very spot-on satire of the differences between Obama's promises vs administration, and this cartoon's a really spot-on satire of the differences between Republican administrations and promises.

And of course the most important message of the series, "little real change ever happens in the Changeobot world", regardless of who's in charge. NOT EVEN THE TRANSFORMERS CAN TRANSFORM THE POLITICAL STRUCTURE

=======

However, while the political jokes were very well executed, and I appreciated it, I believe most of the humour may have went over most people's heads. You should stick with the approach your Prop 8 cartoon used: Political humour mixed with stuff that will also entertain the rest of us. The Prop 8 cartoon did this well. Gay beavers always work well.

I think your political cartoons are great and have even greater potential, and I'd love to see what political issue your next cartoon tackles! Keep it up!

+Fav, 10/10, oh and totally voting for this for Monthly Top Ten.

The Fear Hole - Episode 8

"Improved!"

date: November 1, 2009

A fan of this series, and I'm glad to see that the artwork has improved vastly since you got your drawing tablet. While the animation is still slightly choppy, it's nice to see that your FBF animation is getting better!

The sky-warping and design of the 'real' devil really was the best part of this episode. The 'real' devil's design was very creative - it looked like a very bloody depiction of lust and false idolatry... or something like that. In any case it was really cool.

Keep up the series! =D

-Last Resort-

"Surreal, perfect! Now put in the NG preloader."

submission: -Last Resort-
date: October 26, 2009

The animation was perfect: it pulled off the 'scratchy graphics' look, but the frame-by-frame animation itself was very slick! The music fit nicely as well, from being ironic to emphasizing the creepiness of it all.

And of course, the surrealness of the cartoon. Country Boy and Evil Sausage were my favourites: they were just hilarious!

---

But the real reason I'm reviewing is because I noticed this flash doesn't have a Halloween preloader, and according to the Halloween 2009 page, "You must include the NG Halloween Preloader to participate!"

I'm asking you, please, PLEASE put the NG Halloween Preloader in, or you won't be able to win the $1000 that is SO DESPERATELY CALLING YOUR NAME. I truly believe that you and this cartoon deserve it.

----

You are awesome. 10/10.

Author's Response:

Hey, thanks for the review!
It's ok if I don't win the money, this was never made for Halloween anyway. I hadn't caught on that it could be for Halloween until people started telling me it was 'the best Halloween submission yet' sorta thing. I left a note in the Author comments apologising to all the people who wanted this to win that you need the preloader and this wasn't made for the competition. But it's been put in the Halloween collection anyway, so I'm not sure what that's about. But maybe I'll make an actual entry for the next competition. :)

"OH GOD HERE IT COMES."

------

The ending was okay, and it's a fun little joke, but the few "cutscenes" + my hoping something happens at 9000 barely kept me entertained long enough to reach the end. As other reviews probably show, there weren't enough cutscenes to keep the attention of most people.

Animation was somewhat mediocre, sound doesn't loop very well, but the voicing was good. But I guess the bad qualities are forgivable given that the flash is supposed to be a joke, and that this was an old film of yours.

Overall, 6/10, I guess. It's good for a small chuckle if you've got the time and the obsession with memes.

T E T R I S ' D: The Game

"Great concept!"

date: October 11, 2009

The avoiding-tetris-blocks concept was already really cool, as your animations demonstrated. The ninja-moves was a very nice touch; and the 'K' button came in very useful. (The walljump, however, given the small game arena, was somewhat impractical.) It was also thoughtful to include an WASD alternative. =)

However, there are a few things that can easily be improved on.
1) The guy slides too much in the air, usually sending him flying off the edge of the arena. And because the guy slides, it's really hard to even walljump back up the edge.
2) The collision detection is somewhat off. (Usually not deadly, so it's forgivable.)
3) There is this one glitch where, if *inside* a hole, the K button no longer works.

But I must end this review with kudos to making the tetris blocks fall EXACTLY so they all fit, with NO gaps inbetween, and YET, they fall differently EVERY time. Being a developer, I really admire the programming skills behind that. Not to mention that row-maximization in Tetris is actually NP-Complete...

-----

Overall, this is a great little casual game and supplements the series well, so good job!

P.S: Lol, I can stand RIIIGHT at the very edge of the arena and not get killed for about 8 seconds. (Then the red line catches up.)

Fancy Donkey Tea Party

"Expectations."

date: October 9, 2009

Expectation: It's going to be a poltical satire involving the Democratic American government and the fiscally conservative Tea Party protests, with much biting intellectual commentary on the USA's major role in the current global economy!

Realization: Wut.

October 9, 2009

Author's Response:

I didn't know the Republicans had tea party protests.

Dexter in 2 Minutes

"I think I've been had."

date: September 25, 2009

I'm a huge Dexter fan, and at first I thought this was actually going to be a quick comedic rundown of stuff like the Ice Truck Killer, Lila, Miguel, etc. It started off quite well, with the direct quote from Dexter Morgan, along with the hilariously exaggerated portrayal of Doakes and Rita.

But the 'twist' halfway kind of threw me off, and maybe it's just the Dexter fan-geek in me talking, but I didn't like it because Rita's phonecalls are, I think, relatively trivial in the series. What about the Code of Harry, Dexter's childhood, or the times Dexter almost got caught? Focusing on those (especially the Code) would have made a much better caricature of the series.

The cartoon representations were actually quite accurate. You really caught the classic Dexter expression and facial features! The animation and audio was also quite good. The huge room-spin at Rita's first call was a good example of good animation, and the music was comfortably close enough to Dexter's. Voicing was spot-on for Dexter and Doakes too. =) (Although Rita could have used a pitch-shift. Use Audacity.)

Fianlly, Masuka. Needed a bit of Masuka's perviness. =P

But yeah, I am psyched for Season 4. YAY SON OF DEXTER, and YAY YOU for making this toon!

Time Fcuk

"Complete. Mindkcfu."

submission: Time Fcuk
date: September 18, 2009

Oh wow. Ever since I saw the trailer I have been so psyched about this, and it didn't disappoint!

===================

-----The gaming:

Never have I seen so many different game mechanisms put together so elegantly. There's platform-venturing, gravity-switching, world-inverting, button-pressing, box-pushing, dimension-shifting, key-grabbing, portal-travelling, terrain-destroying... omg, srsly.

All this made for some of the most intricate puzzles I've ever seen, and I've yet to seen what crazy puzzles the users came up with...

-----The plot:

Does this game have a coherent moral? Is it a series of observations about life? Or does it all mean nothing, and, as you said, "even though it means nothing logically, we all still see it as something that its not." Is that what you're trying to say about life? That we look for meaning in a meaningless life? Am I scratching the surface or digging for nothing? Question mark?

Either way, the dark / self-referential humour was well done. The way it's executed by messing around with time is very nice. ("I'm from Level 4. Oh, and who's Steven?") Furthermore, Steven's appearance and the weird messages really screwed with my mind. ( I still don't get the "walk through the wall and don't look back" message... Was I supposed to? )

I also loved the Good Ending story about you and your box when you were a kid. Seeing the inspiration of this game, as well as your inner psychology, made me appreciate this game all the more.

The Bad Ending story was ... just depressing. But artistically depressing. (Also, imho, the cutscene for the Bad Ending looked a lot cooler. RUSSIAN NESTED DOLL HEADSPLODE?!)

----The art and music:

Creepy, but not pretentious. It was a subtle kind of beautiful-creepy. Anyway, it was amazing.

====================

One thing I do have to complain about, however, are the keyboard controls. Because the keys to pick up a box [S] and to switch dimensions [A] are so close, frequently I would accidentally switch dimensions when I wanted to pick up a box, which usually killed me. Also, why did you make [SPACE] jump instead of [UP]?...

Shift to change dimensions, Space to pick up boxes, and Arrow Keys to move would have been much more convenient. Or maybe just conventional. SHEEP.

(And he just shrugs when I press up. What...?)

This is an amazingly AWESOME game, definitely needs to be a nominee for the NG Best Game of the Year, as well as several Indie Game competitions...!

----

P.S: I love you and your puns. "Time Fkuc is a game about perspective, growth and self reflection."

Everything. This is immaculate, flawless, perfect.

This deserves the Tank Award 2009, hands down.
