-Last Resort-

"Surreal, perfect! Now put in the NG preloader."

submission: -Last Resort-
date: October 26, 2009

The animation was perfect: it pulled off the 'scratchy graphics' look, but the frame-by-frame animation itself was very slick! The music fit nicely as well, from being ironic to emphasizing the creepiness of it all.

And of course, the surrealness of the cartoon. Country Boy and Evil Sausage were my favourites: they were just hilarious!

---

But the real reason I'm reviewing is because I noticed this flash doesn't have a Halloween preloader, and according to the Halloween 2009 page, "You must include the NG Halloween Preloader to participate!"

I'm asking you, please, PLEASE put the NG Halloween Preloader in, or you won't be able to win the $1000 that is SO DESPERATELY CALLING YOUR NAME. I truly believe that you and this cartoon deserve it.

----

You are awesome. 10/10.

Author's Response:

Hey, thanks for the review!
It's ok if I don't win the money, this was never made for Halloween anyway. I hadn't caught on that it could be for Halloween until people started telling me it was 'the best Halloween submission yet' sorta thing. I left a note in the Author comments apologising to all the people who wanted this to win that you need the preloader and this wasn't made for the competition. But it's been put in the Halloween collection anyway, so I'm not sure what that's about. But maybe I'll make an actual entry for the next competition. :)

Fancy Donkey Tea Party

"Expectations."

date: October 9, 2009

Expectation: It's going to be a poltical satire involving the Democratic American government and the fiscally conservative Tea Party protests, with much biting intellectual commentary on the USA's major role in the current global economy!

Realization: Wut.

October 9, 2009

Author's Response:

I didn't know the Republicans had tea party protests.

KF : first submission

"Hm, that guy looks familiar..."

date: June 23, 2009

For a first flash, not bad! Obviously, quite a few faults, which I shall now address:

1) File size. Here's a tip: use Audacity (free program), Window's Sound Recorder, or some other sound-editing program to clip the songs you used. You importing the songs in their entirety is what caused the file size to be over 8MB. (They were hi-quality songs, yes) Another option is to use shorter songs from NG's very own Audio Portal.

2) Graphics. Okay, yeah, it's my :the game: character, which is deliberately simple. But the backgrounds were quite plain, especially the coloured one. Use gradients for the sky, and blur white blobs to create clouds! Also try to add shadows for realism.

3) Animation. It's choppy, but forgivable for a first submission. No one's rushing you, but when you feel confident enough, be sure to try higher frame rates. (fps: frames per second) At least you actually attempted a walk cycle, unlike my hopping guys. Just try to add more inbetween frames, but not any more than you can handle. (before the animation goes from choppy to glitchy) Lastly, even though this is completely unnecessary, a few flare effects would make the shining light look a lot cooler.

Anyway, not bad for a first animation, and I must say I'm kinda happy that someone liked :the game: enough to make an animation starring the 'main' character. Thank you!

I beta-tested this game on Mochi! I'm glad you took my advice on allowing the player to restart immediately. However, you can still use the arrow keys to move the dead body, there's no level select, and you can jump in midair.

Other than that, a really great game! *added to action collection*

Author's Response:

Thanks. i have some problems to fix for the sequel, including a total rehaul of the collision detection system.Hopefully, that will increase smoothness of play and better controls. There will also be new features to the game. keep an eye out!

No Frame By Frame

"Quite well done!"

submission: No Frame By Frame
date: March 11, 2009

The animation for the first half of the animation was iffy, but that's forgivable considering you only got your tablet while animating the second half. And the second half of the movie was very well animated. (Even in the first half, the lip sync was spot on)

It was a short flash, and it delivered swift and efficiently. The only suggestion I can make is to have them blink occasionally, like for emphasis.

For the sound, I'd recommend Audacity (free software) to remove the noise in the background.

Overall, great flash! (Also wow, Joe making an FBF animation as a response to this. XD)

March 11, 2009

Author's Response:

i don't really like having them blink unless its a drastic change of eyes or something cartoony like that. i do have audacity, but i dont think anything could remove my grandma's dishwashing. i could've removed the fuzz, but i got a little too lazy.

thanks for the review! and joe is sorta spiteful like that. his is with the song vampire weekend by a-punk.

or is it a-punk by vampire weekend...

i can never be too sure....

Absolutely wonderful! Owning two cats, I fret the day they die, so this flash really struck a chord inside me. The colour theme was great, and you really built up the mood!

I was genuinely shocked - like, I almost fell off my chair - when I saw the protagonist turn around to reveal the cat in the window.

I love your work - keep it up! 5/5 10/10

Sketched-Merry Sketchmas

"Amazing sketch!"

date: December 18, 2008

The dialogue was perfect: it was just absolutely hilarious, good quality sound, and the way that they speak was so natural!

However, the graphics left a little to be desired for. It was well drawn, but for animation and body movement, they were not as natural as the voicing.

Still, excellent piece of work!

And, I don't know if anyone has made this lame pun yet in the reviews, but...
MERRY AXEMAS.

December 18, 2008

Author's Response:

Again, I love my voice actors. They are amongst the best out there in my opinion and they are still nice enough to do it for me unpaid (someday I'll figure out a way to pay 'em back, haha).

I do agree with you on the animation front. I think I am improving with every release, but my strong suit still remains in storyboarding and comics. I think in the future we are going to start looking for additional animators to collaborate on some shorts to get a fresh take on the 'sketched' series.

Thanks for the review (and the pun... I actually feel kinda dumb for not having thought of it myself.)

"Well animated!"

submission: ? intelligence !
date: September 25, 2008

The music was perfect, the voices let for a very quirky atmosphere, and the sketchy animation style just added onto the quirkiness. I enjoyed the animation a LOT! 5/5

My only complaint is that the joke wasn't original. I'm not entirely sure where it came from, but I think the joke was from some syndicated comic strip. I dunno.

But otherwise, fantastic!

September 25, 2008

Author's Response:

Thanks, dude. Yes, I am aware that the joke is so generic that there is a big chance other people did something similar throughout the history of mankind.

Awesome Racer

"Uncanny!"

submission: Awesome Racer
date: August 10, 2008

It had a very Egoraptor feel to it, and I do dare say this has been the most Egoraptor-esque tribute to the Awesome series! Great writing, great graphics, and great animation!

Though I do have some further suggestions to make it more Egoraptoresque:
---First of all, in the Awesome series, the characters very rarely show their teeth. Here, while the lip sync IS fuller, it's not Egoraptor.
---Second of all, that AMAZING picture of Speed's massive eyelashes, while hilarious and fantastically well done, was a huge giveaway that this was not an Egoraptor.

But, all in all, it was very Egoraptoresque and even if not, was a very entertaining and damn hilarious Flash. Keep it up!

(BTW, I like YOUR own original animation style just as much. Don't you ever give up your own style for someone else's!)
